Power of Women: Nina D. Melker
March honors Women’s History Month and we are excited to highlight all of the dynamic women in our Power of Women Employee Resource Group to draw attention to the deliberate action that we are taking as a group & as an institution to empower & uplift the women in our community. Our goal is to be leaders & mentors at Berkshire Bank, and to also model a system of uplift & support for our entire Berkshire Bank community & the banking world at large.
Today we are celebrating Nina Melker.
How do you define a leader?
A leader is a mentor that establishes a true team environment. A leader needs to be a good listener, and lead by example.
Who is your “Shero” one of the biggest influencers/mentor in your life and career? Why?
My Shero is my mother, Lydia. She raised me to be independent and taught me that if I worked hard and set goals for myself that I could succeed in anything I set my sights on. My mother was a single mom that worked hard to raise me and my brother with a loving and nurturing hand. Unfortunately, I lost my dear mom to cancer ten years ago. I carry her wisdom, love and advice with me daily and it has helped me to be the person I am today.
Can you recall a defining moment when you were mentored by your Shero or another woman? What did that experience teach you?
I can’t recall a defining moment to share.
How do you celebrate the women in your life?
I have two daughters and both of their best friends are like daughters to me. We spend time together - just us women and we celebrate life and our love for each other. I enjoy being a mentor to them and help to guide them in their career and personal lives.
Where do you find your power?
I find my power from networking with other women. Sharing stories, successes and challenges and learning from each other is invaluable.
The Power of Women (POW) employee resource group is a safe space for all people who identify as female and their allies. The goal of this ERG is to support women in the workplace by suggesting programming including mentoring and coaching, reviewing corporate communication efforts, elevating important topics to management and organizing celebratory events.
