Power of Women: Melissa Myers
March honors Women’s History Month and we are excited to highlight all of the dynamic women in our Power of Women Employee Resource Group to draw attention to the deliberate action that we are taking as a group & as an institution to empower & uplift the women in our community. Our goal is to be leaders & mentors at Berkshire Bank, and to also model a system of uplift & support for our entire Berkshire Bank community & the banking world at large.
Today we are celebrating Melissa Myers
How do you define a leader?
A leader leverages the strengths of others to achieve common goals, and uses interpersonal skills to coach and develop others. The individual is able to assess and manage his/her emotions and those of others, and use empathetic skills to guide and motivate, as well as organize, prioritize and delegate work. Leaders can be designated, for example, via their job title or family role, i.e. parents; and/or leaders can emerge organically; but you can’t be a leader without a follower.
Who is your “Shero” one of the biggest influencers/mentor in your life and career? Why?
I am inspired by world leaders like Maya Angelou and Michelle Obama. And I am inspired by something about almost everyone I meet — whether it is by seeing behavior I would like to emulate, or behavior I would not.
Can you recall a defining moment when you were mentored by your Shero or another woman? What did that experience teach you?
I can’t say that I have had one defining moment, but more that I have learned lots of lessons along the way that I attribute to different people and their differing styles. I most enjoy leaders who show that they are human and are able to communicate with everyone as if they are important, and who can find ways to deliver difficult messages, rather than shy away from them. I appreciate leaders who are masters of their area of responsibility, and who are willing to take the time to share their expertise. And I am always inspired by the depths of human kindness.
How do you celebrate the women in your life?
I celebrate the women in my life through friendship, service, and by giving my time. I celebrate the women in my life by listening, showing that I care, and by looking for those things about them from which I can learn more about myself. I honor and celebrate them by taking that piece of them and making it part of me; and by acknowledging their impact on my journey.
Where do you find your power?
I find my power in love, in forgiveness, and in helping others. Nothing feels as good as that moment when lots of planning and hard work result in that feeling of synergy that you just know in your bones is the right way forward.
The Power of Women (POW) employee resource group is a safe space for all people who identify as female and their allies. The goal of this ERG is to support women in the workplace by suggesting programming including mentoring and coaching, reviewing corporate communication efforts, elevating important topics to management and organizing celebratory events.
