CLOSING OF PRIDE

Supporting Black Community + Pride

As we close out the month of PRIDE and with July 4th upon us, our PRIDE Employee Resource Group wanted to highlight the intersectionality between PRIDE, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, the Black Lives Matter movement of today and the ongoing attack on the rights of Black - & Brown-bodied people.

In the spirit of our BeFirst Values, we feel that it is important to align ourselves with the truth of the history of the struggle for freedom within and for the United States. The people who have sparked, created the platforms & policy, and who have led the American people to claim our freedoms have been Black & Brown people, including youth.

This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall police raids on a gay Bar in New York City.

This month we honor Marsha P. Johnson, a 23 year-old Black Trans woman, and Sylvia Rivera, a 17 year-old Latinx Trans woman, who together in 1969 headed the “Gay Liberation” marches that became what is known today as LGBTQ Pride.

In honor of both of these women, our PRIDE, POC, & Ally ERGs would like to highlight the Black Trans Lives marches that have been taking place throughout the country, as well as True Colors of Hartford, CT, a youth service provider in Berkshire’s footprint, that provides assistance and foster placement for young members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Below you will find a list of resources to support both Black, Brown & LGBTQIA+ people.

We encourage all of you to take the time to honor and support these organizations in their efforts and thank them for their work.
