May Small Business Month
The month of May is traditionally the celebration of Small Business Month. Due to COVID-19 advisories and focus towards relief efforts, this year’s celebration of small business week has been postponed to a later date in 2020.
We’re excited to celebrate with the small business community later this year. In the meantime, we also feel the importance of highlighting small businesses in our footprint now more than ever.
This month we will be featuring some of the incredible small businesses within the Berkshire Bank family, while highlighting some need to know truths about small business and their impact on the overall wellness of our economy.
Today we are celebrating Cindy Joyce of Pillar Search and HR Consulting.
Can you tell us a bit more about your company?
Founded: July 2015 (so Pillar’s 5 year anniversary is rapidly approaching!)

What’s something your company has worked on that you’re most proud of? Why does this part of the work resonate with you the most?
I find great joy in finding the right person for a search. Considering that my clients are nonprofit and mission-driven organizations, the candidates that I work with are literally making the world a better place!
What was your first job? What did you love most about it?
A chambermaid! I summered in Maine and it was a job that would keep my afternoons free for the beach. It was the least glamorous job ever. What it taught me was humility (oh, the stories I could tell!) and the value of hard work.
What is the most important piece of advice you have been given about money and/or owning a business? Who gave it to you?
The advice that has most resonated with me was a quote from Diane von Fürstenberg.
“You just don’t keep on climbing. You go through all sorts of ups and downs, successes and failures. In the same way that when you’re up at the top of your success, acclaimed and all, people think that you are at the top — but you yourself know that it’s not so good because you are going through difficulties. And, in the same way, when people think it’s over — you know that’s also not true because you are already climbing back up.”
How would you say your company/organization positively impacts the community?
Through Pillar’s work both in recruiting and human resources consulting, I am helping nonprofits to be more effective and ultimately have an even bigger impact on the communities they serve.
